Days of Doubt

If you have ever felt like your prayers hit the ceiling, God is far away from you, or your prayers do not matter one lick – this page is for you.

There is much discouragement in the area of prayer today. Obviously, our enemy knows of its great power. I myself have known my own dark night of the soul when I lost faith in prayer. Usually, Satan will attack you hardest in an area God wants to use you in mightily!

First, you need to know you are not alone! Most every Saint has hit the prayer wall and asked where God is. Your doubts, struggles and questions are shared with many.

This page will certainly not address every concern, nor answer every question, but I hope to encourage you and lead you to excellent resources.

First, I believe the most important encouragement all souls need today is in regards to the Nature and Person of Jesus Christ. Because most of our struggles originate in the mind – in our belief system, we must understand that we fear most what we understand the least. We lack confidence in approaching God if we misunderstand WHO He is.

He is not like the Dad so many children have known growing up. Absent, unloving. He is the FULL essence of LOVE without any blemish. Not only is our Father better, more loving and more present than we now understand – we have an intercessor in the one who died for us. Jesus is always interceding for YOU!

When you feel you cannot pray or do not know what to say, the Spirit can pray for you.

“..the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” Romans 8:26 – See, even Paul struggled in the school of prayer. You are in great company!

May I encourage you to take just one small step into faith again? A whisper, a hope. All God needs is a little seed. I believe you have that much just by clicking on this page.

A mustard seed is incredibly small. Interesting that Christ used this seed to teach us about our faith. He knew we would work from very small places – that HIS glory and HIS might would be displayed through us to the world.

“Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all of your heart.” Jeremiah 29:12-13

There are various barriers to an effective and hopeful prayer life for His Saints today. The great news is that we can break those walls down and began to know the joy of intimacy with the Father.

“Pride and fear have kept us at a safe distance. But as the resistance within us is overcome by the operations of faith, hope and love, we begin moving upward into the divine intimacy. This, in turn, empowers us for ministry to others” – Richard Foster, Prayer

This truth above is precisely why Satan wants to attack your faith, your hope and your ability to love. These gifts can overcome the highest walls of doubt. We know that the greatest of these gifts is LOVE.

May you be encouraged today in the truth of God’s love for you!

He Has Not Left You

“Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there; If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.” Psalm 139:7-10

We have all felt the absence of God. Even Christ. Yet even as Christ gave up Himself for us on the cross, God knew redemption was coming and His love would show up.

Christ promised us He would NEVER leave us. He keeps His promises!

He Intends for You to Have Powerful and Effective Prayers

“The prayers of a righteous man are powerful and effective.” James 5:16b

Notice it says they ARE powerful and effective. Your prayers do matter. Your prayers can change the course of the world! In the first part of this verse, we see just one reason they may not be as effective as they can be: our relationships with others and our sins against them.

“Therefore, confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.”

When we confess our sins to one another, we receive a healing that can soften our hearts to the Spirit of God. It is a humble and contrite heart that can come before the Father. (Psalm 51:17)

If Christ Himself was a man of prayer, we can surely see the power of prayer! We can learn much about effective prayers through the Lord’s Prayer.

When Words are Hard to Find, Silence is Powerful

God is not pushy. He will wait for you. To praise Him, trust Him again. He just knows you were created to commune with Him. It is the most beautiful experience of this life.

Silence is not a bad thing. In fact, it can be very powerful when approaching the throne of grace. When you are not yet ready, or do not know what to say to rebuild your faith, come to the throne anyway. Sit with Him. Play praise music. Read a Psalm. Give God a change to show up for you.

Margaret Guenther, Director of the Center for Christian Spirituality at the General Theological Seminary, counsels many on spiritual direction. She says most people seek counsel in the area of prayer:

“They feel they do not pray enough and want either to be scolded or excused for their deficiencies. More important still is their sense that they are somehow not praying correctly, with the implication that there is a right way or a secret recipe, something that can be taught them cognitively.” – Holy Listening: The Art of Spiritual Direction

There is a reason God does not supply an easy button or detailed recipe for all of life’s trials or even for practicing spiritual disciplines. We would have no need to seek Him out personally. We could just follow a program. If we had all the answers, we would miss out on knowing and needing the GREAT ANSWER, who is Christ Himself.

So, there is no one-size-fits-all prayer for every person or circumstance. There are, however,  unlimited treasures of direction in Scripture.
