Who Art in Heaven

We see right away, in the second line of the Lord’s prayer, an answer to a question still asked by millions today: Is there a heaven?

When we look into the pieces of this prayer instead of only reciting it, we find concrete truth to hold onto and hope that can last: there is a heaven, and our God reigns in His kingdom. As believers, this is our kingdom and He is our King. We are resident aliens in this world awaiting our home in another unseen country.

As Solomon dedicated the temple, he declared,

“But will God really dwell on earth? The heavens, even the highest heaven, cannot contain you. How much less this temple I have built?” 1 Kings 8:27

There are no boundaries around our God. He cannot be contained. His glory is over all the earth.

“For this is what the high and lofty ONE says – he who lives forever, who name is holy: I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite.” Isaiah 57:15

Whoa! Our Heavenly Father does not only dwell in heaven…but among men who are humble. He draws near to the humble, the contrite, the lowly in spirit. Why – to revive us! To lift us up!

This line in the Lord’s prayer is a call to LOOK BEYOND what we can see. To look with spiritual eyes and believe in the spiritual realm. It is a call for hope in a heavenly home.

May we respond:

  1. You dwell in heaven and among the contrite, Oh, God. May I be found humble.
  2. I look forward to the trumpet call, come, Lord Jesus!
  3. Give me spiritual eyes, dear Lord, that I may see as Elijah’s servant and know you are always with me

Heaven Came Down and Glory Filled My Soul (Lyrics by John W. Peterson)

O what a wonderful, wonderful day
Day I will never forget
After I wandered in darkness away
Jesus my Savior I met
O what a tender, compassionate friend
He met the need of my heart
Shadows dispelling with joy I am telling
He made all the darkness depart!

Chorus:
Heaven came down and glory filled my soul
When at the cross the Savior made me whole
My sins were washed away, and my night was turned to day
Heaven came down and glory filled my soul.

Born of the Spirit with life from above
Into God’s family divine
Justified fully through Calvary’s love
O what a standing is mine!
And th transaction so quickly was made
When as I a sinner I came
Took of the offer of grace he did proffer
He saved me, O praise His dear name!

Now I’ve a hope that will surely endure
After the passing of time
I have a future in heaven for sure
There in those mansions sublime
And it’s because of that wonderful day
When at the cross I believed
Riches eternal and blessings supernal
From His precious hand I received.

Chorus:
Heaven came down and glory filled my soul
When at the cross the Savior made me whole
My sins were washed away, and my night was turned to day
Heaven came down and glory filled my soul.
